This Week’s Practice: Scripture Reflection
Read the following passage of scripture, and spend some time reflecting on the questions that follow. The point is not to come up with the “right” answer, because there really isn’t one. But it’s about paying attention to your own soul and to God.
“Are you tired? Worn out? Burned out on religion? Come to me. Get away with me and you’ll recover your life. I’ll show you how to take a real rest. Walk with me and work with me—watch how I do it. Learn the unforced rhythms of grace. I won’t lay anything heavy or ill-fitting on you. Keep company with me and you’ll learn to live freely and lightly.”
Matthew 11:28-30 (Message paraphrase)
How would you respond to the questions Jesus asked: Are you tired? Worn out? Burned out on religion?
As you hear the invitation of Jesus to come away with him, how do you feel? Does that sound compelling and freeing, or do you feel some resistance?
Is there anything you’re carrying today that feels heavy or ill-fitting? Name it in the presence of God, and imagine how it would feel for him to remove that from you.
Imagine how it might feel to “live freely and lightly” as Jesus described in these verses. What might look different about your days if this was how your life felt?
